Training week 3
Objective
w More work on the wait and recall
w Teach your dog left and right turns over jumps
w Send over at least two jumps.
w Work on the bent pipe tunnel.
w Building confidence on the dog walk
w More work on the staggered
weave poles.
Two sets of jumps set at right angles for teaching turns. Five jumps
in a line for the stay recall and the bent tunnel linking the poles and the
dog walk. The jumps are still set at their original height. No new equipment
was brought in this week as it was mainly consolidation.
Sit stay and recall more
than one jump revisited
Once again we worked on the stay, recall and send. At this stage most
of the dogs can wait at least three jumps and be sent over one. We will keep
on working until the stay is solid for as long as required and the send away
to the toy is at least over two jumps.
Left and right turn
over jumps ![]()
Using the jumps set at right angles handlers began by sitting the dog
in front of a jump and walking around to the other side ( just to the right
of centre slightly turned inwards ). Call over the jump keeping the dog on the
left, as they come past give your right turn command and throw the toy over
the jump to the right, sending the dog as per usual. Repeat in opposite direction.
The next exercise was the same as above but the toy was placed instead of thrown.
In exercise three they recalled the dog and sent to the toy
not forgetting the all important turn command.
The handlers began where they left of last week on the straight pipe, alternating left and right sides. Once confidence was built up the tunnel was bent slightly and the exercise continued bending the tunnel a little bit more each time.
Negotiating the
dog walk and stop on the touch point
We again took the dogs over the dog walk. Bringing the dogs to the up ramp, handlers were asked to give their command for the dog walk and, with a hand lightly in the collar, guide the dog across. They were encouraged to take their hands off as soon as the dog was steady - moving with the dog and encouraging along. The contact command was given at the correct time and the dog stopped in the desired position on the touch point. We then repeated this with the dog on the opposite side of the handler
Not a lot to say really just more of the same. See week two
